We are currently reviewing our volunteer program and developing a new Volunteer Strategy to strengthen and enhance how we engage and support our volunteers.
This process will help us better align volunteer opportunities with our service goals and community needs. While some programs, such as our night service, are temporarily paused during this review, we are still actively welcoming law student volunteers into our service.
We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to sharing updates as the new strategy takes shape. If you have any questions or would like to express interest in current or future opportunities, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
We rely on volunteers, both students and lawyers, to assist with the delivery of our services, and we are incredibly grateful for their support and commitment.
We have many different types of volunteers who assist us, including:
We are currently reviewing and developing a new Volunteer Strategy to strengthen and enhance our volunteer engagement. As part of this process, our night service has been temporarily paused.
Historically, our night service operated after hours every Tuesday from 6pm–8pm, offering legal advice in both general and family law. Volunteer lawyers played a vital role in delivering this service, assisting clients with matters such as separation, divorce, child contact, property settlement, motor vehicle accidents, neighbourhood disputes, and credit and debt issues.
While the night service is on hold, we continue to welcome expressions of interest from lawyers with a current practising certificate and experience in family or general law. We value your support and will be in touch as new opportunities arise through our updated strategy.
We have an established volunteering program for law students that allows them to gain valuable legal experience in a variety of supervised roles. The areas in which we engage law student volunteers include solicitor assistance, court duty, community legal education, and general administration.
Volunteer positions are dependent on availability, and we prefer volunteers to remain with our service for six to twelve months. We have the capacity to support between 12 and 15 volunteer students at any time and we keep prospective volunteer applications for up to six months from the initial time of contact.
If you are considering volunteering with us, you can learn more about what to expect from the experience by reading Jack’s volunteer profile.
From time to time, we offer placements to students undertaking community development or community services studies. We also provide opportunities for project-based volunteers with relevant skills and experience to assist with specific tasks.
Volunteers placed in our community team have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working on a variety of community development projects including community legal education sessions, awareness-raising campaigns, and law reform activities.
