Not all intimate partner violence is physical. There is often financial control imposed within abusive relationships, and devastating, long-term financial impacts after leaving the relationship. Family violence survivors can inherit debt or poor credit ratings, lose property or have to deal with fines incurred by their abusive current or ex-partner.
As part of the Barwon Month of Action we partnered with Geelong Library, Barwon Health and Deakin University to host a community conversation and panel discussion to raise awareness about financial abuse as a form of family violence. Our event Financial Abuse and Sexually Transmitted Debt – the Price Women Pay brought together a range of experts from financial counselling, social work and the legal sector to share real-life stories and information about the effects of financial abuse and the road to recovery.
We also engaged local Barwon community workers in the conversation through running a Law for Community Workers professional development training on how to best support clients who are experiencing financial abuse.
