Barwon Community Legal Service is proud to welcome Div and Biftu through the Emerging Lawyers Program, a statewide initiative led by Women’s Legal Service Victoria to strengthen the community legal sector and expand access to family violence and family law support.
The program combines structured supervision, specialised training and best‑practice service models to support early‑career lawyers while ensuring people experiencing family violence or complex family law issues can access quality legal support across Victoria.
CEO Bryanna Connell said the service was proud to be part of the initiative and excited to welcome Div and Biftu.
“Div and Biftu bring energy, curiosity, and a deep commitment to community,” Bryanna said. “Their contributions will help us support clients with the compassion and dignity they deserve.”
“For emerging lawyers, community legal centres play a vital role in shaping practitioners who are not only technically skilled, but also community‑minded, compassionate, and grounded in social justice,” she said. “By working with clients facing systemic disadvantage, they gain a deep understanding of local issues and the power of the law to create change.”
Biftu said she was drawn to the role because of the structured mentoring and opportunity to gain practical family law experience in a community legal centre setting.
“I like working in a CLC because I can support people who need it most, see the difference the work makes, and contribute to broader social change,” Biftu said. “It is rewarding to be involved in work that prioritises access to justice and makes a real impact in the community.”
Div said the Emerging Lawyers Program offered a highly supportive pathway aligned with her commitment to access to justice.
“The support from Women’s Legal Service Victoria throughout the program is invaluable,” Div said. “This program’s focus on family law and family violence aligns with where I want to build my career.
“I’m looking forward to gaining hands‑on experience, learning from experienced mentors, and developing the practical skills I need to become a well‑rounded and confident family lawyer.
“Working at a CLC provides the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, especially for those who might not otherwise have access to legal support. It is also incredibly rewarding to work in a collaborative, purpose‑driven environment focused on advocating for the community.”
