The Barwon Elder Abuse Primary Prevention (BEAPP) Network and the Dementia Agency Network Geelong (DANG) are hosting the Changing Mind & Positive Ageing Expo, an exciting and inclusive free event aimed at celebrating positive ageing. The Barwon Elder Abuse Primary Prevention (BEAPP) Network is led by Barwon Community Legal Service and is one of ten networks supported by the Victorian Government to combat elder abuse through community awareness and prevention.
To be held on Thursday, October 24th, from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM at The Eastern Hub in East Geelong, the event coincides with the Victorian Seniors Festival, a month-long celebration of older Victorians, with the theme: Explore, Engage, Evolve.
The Expo aims to foster community connection and support, both of which are crucial in combating isolation, a known factor contributing to elder abuse.
Bryanna Connell, CEO of Barwon Community Legal Service says “Social isolation is a significant issue affecting older people in the Greater Geelong region, with local data revealing that nearly 20% of households in the Portarlington region are older people living alone .”
Ms Connell, says, “Strong social connections and access to community services are crucial in preventing elder abuse, as they address key factors like isolation and lack of support. Community events like this play a vital role in reducing social isolation, promoting inclusivity, and fostering the connections that help safe guard older people. By bringing people together and offering access to essential services, we create a safer, more supportive environment where older adults can thrive.”
Featuring over 20 stall holders, the expo will have a focus on healthy ageing, focusing on mental, physical, and social well-being. Attendees will gain access to resources and services that support active and connected lives as they age.
Guest Speakers include Dr. Alastair Mander, Consultant Physician and Geriatrician, and Lisa Mitchell, Geriatrician and Ageism Researcher, who will discuss the latest advancements in dementia research and the influence of language in shaping our perceptions of ageing.
The event will also feature a free community lunch, a live radio broadcast from 94.7 The Pulse FM and free demonstrations from Ambulance Victoria.
